We are very disappointed to have to tell you that we have cancelled the production of Little Mary Sunshine for August 2012.  We had many talented people who auditioned for the show, but the rehearsal schedule stretching from June through mid-August proved to be too difficult a commitment for many to make.  So many of our locals travel during the summer months that an August show, particularly a musical with a cast of 19 (minimum) seems to pose an insurmountable challenge.  Some willing performers and the two directors made an effort to pull it together, but, in the end, we decided that if we wanted to provide our audience with a truly outstanding show, we needed to rethink our schedule.  So there won't be a summer musical this year.  That's the bad news.

The good news is that the audition process brought out a lot of new, very talented singers and actors.  We are delighted to get to know them and to have them get to know us.  We look forward to utilizing their talents in future performances and are now planning another musical for October as part of our regular Showcase Season.  The "new" musical is Side by Side by Sondhheim.  This fabulous musical revue traces the early career of one of Broadway's most famous composers.  With solos, duets, and ensemble perfomances from such musicals as Gypsy, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and Pacific Overtures, the show provides a wonderful vehicle for the very fine local singers.  We are excited to bring it to you and know that you will enjoy this unique musical theatre experience.

And New This Season

El Paseo Arts presents a Foreign Film Festival featuring five films produced in 2010-11.  The films come from countires in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South America and offer a revealing look at life, love, conflict and struggle in the cultures where they are set.

This year El Paseo is a co-op partner in the Laguna Madre Art Gallery in Port Isabel.  This means we have some actual space of our own and we help to sustain an art Gallery in Port Isabel.  We also enjoy the support and talents of the members of ArtSpace on the Island and help to sponsor their educational programs.  This year we are sponsoring a contest for local artists.  The winner's work will be reproduced as a limited edition print and will be distributed as a sponsor gift to sponsors at the Headliner, Executive Producer and Angel Levels.

Continuing Initiatives in Education

This will be the second year of our scholarship program for local high school seniors who will be continuing their education in the arts.  We will also sponsor Pippa's White's moving performance of the "The Story of the Orphan Train" featuring stories about immigrant children who faced life in the new world without families to support them, to grades 4 and 5 in the local public school.

We hope you will join El Paseo and support and enjoy the fine and performing arts in the Lower Laguna Madre Area.

El Paseo Need You!

There are so many ways to be a part of the arts in our area.

  • You can support El Paseo as a member.  Membership information is available on the website and membership has its advantages including discounts on tickets and members only events.
  • You can become a season sponsor.  The Arts have always depended on sponsors and patrons.  El Paseo strives to keep our events afforable for all, but production costs for quality shows are high.  These costs include performance fees, lighting, sound, production rights, costumes, and equipment rental.  Our generous sponsors make it possible for us to bring high quality arts events to our area and to do so at affordable ticket prices for our patrons.  Your sponsorship, large or small, means a lot to us and helps us to make the arts a vital part or our bay area communities for our residents and our visitors.
  • Buy a ticket and attend  performances.  Even better -- bring some friends to share the art experience with you.
  • Help to sponsor our educational initiatives.  Involvement in the arts and arts education helps to enhance student learning and student success.
  • Become a volunteer and get ACTIVE. You can volunteer to share your talents as a member of our "working" Board of Directors.  You can volunteer to help with our events. We need house managers, ushers, committee members, and lots of production crew members and performers for our local productions.
  • Support the local artists and writers by purchasing their work either for yourself or as a special gift for someone who will love having a little art in their lives.

Human beings are the only creatures on earth that create art - its a uniquely human activity.  So get in touch with your creative side and put the arts on your "to do" list.
